Why Choose Mannington

  |   By  |  0 Comments

When you first decide to update your flooring, there are many things to take into consideration. Aside from having floors that are durable and visually appealing, Mannington offers other attributes that can help make the decision easy for you. When you choose Mannington, you’re opting to buy from a family-owned company that cares deeply not only about our products, but about the environment, community, company values and more. Discover why you should choose Mannington below.

We’ve been around for over 100 years.

Mannington Mills was founded, and is still headquartered, in Salem, New Jersey in 1915. Times may have changed, but Mannington and its associates still live by this mission statement: to be the best people to do business with in the flooring industry. As Chairman of the Board Keith Campbell says, “What makes us unique is we have a set of company values that have been around for generations: care, do the right thing, work hard/play hard, and control our own destiny. We live those values every day. It’s the secret to our longevity and success.”

We’re family owned.

Started by John Boston Campbell, Mannington is in its fifth generation of family ownership. This is a rare achievement for any business, as only one percent of family-owned businesses survive to the fifth generation. John started the company to stay close to his two sons, so Mannington was (and remains!) a true family business. In 2016, Mannington was honored as the “New Jersey Family Business of the Year ” by Fairleigh Dickinson University’s Rothman Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

We’re environmentally responsible.

We believe in doing the right thing for our customers, our neighbors, and our products, as well as the environment we share. At Mannington, sustainability comes down to the decisions we make every day and how those decisions flow outward to the world around us. There are many initiatives we undertake to ensure that we are sustainable:

• Since the 1980’s, we’ve been using a more natural option than pesticides by installing and managing gourds for Purple Martins, birds that migrate from Brazil to the United States for the summer months and eat massive amounts of insects.
• We operate & utilize over 3,900 solar panels (3.3 acres!) on seven rooftops of various buildings across our New Jersey facility, and have one of the largest solar arrays in the flooring industry.
• As part of an effort to show how an industrial enterprise can co-exist with the agricultural and farming community and positively contribute to both, in 2009 our New Jersey site began to house honeybees and is now home to as many as 5 honeybee colonies. This effort followed with similar honeybee colony at our Florida manufacturing facility.
• We have several manufacturing locations that are ISO 14001 registered. This is an environmental standard that provides a system for continual improvement in environmental performance.

We work with our community.

As a fifth generation, family-owned business, we feel a responsibility to help those around us and to make our communities safe and help them thrive. Below are a few ways Mannington helps our community:

• Our associates are actively involved in large national charities like United Way, Meals on Wheels, Boys and Girls Clubs of America, and American Red Cross, as well as local programs.
• To demonstrate our gratitude for the sacrifices of our nation’s veterans and their families, we have an ongoing partnership with both the Gary Sinise RISE Foundation and Operation FINALLY HOME, organizations that provide custom-built, specially adapted mortgage-free homes to wounded veterans.
• Since 2003, we’ve hosted an annual “Art is Cool” program which recognizes the talent of students from local high schools.
• In 1988, Mannington’s Johnny Campbell and a group of civic-minded residents launched “Stand Up for Salem”, a volunteer based non-profit organization which focuses on inner city revitalization through grass root neighborhood projects.
• Through our partnership with Habitat for Humanity, we regularly donate flooring that has been used in our trade show booths and for new product photo shoots that otherwise may have been discarded and ended up in a landfill.
• Each year we award the Stand On A Better World Scholarship to two graduating seniors from Salem County, NJ high schools.
• We support innovation in education and support Atlanta’s innovative Ron Clark Academy, a middle school that has received worldwide recognition for its success through unconventional teaching methods. Our donation will help with ongoing capital funding needs, including the construction of a new building on its current campus.

There are plenty of factors that go into choosing your flooring, but when you choose Mannington, you can feel good knowing you selected a company that cares deeply about the environment, local communities, education and more.

Mannington Makeovers: Interview with Jennifer from @lilredranch

  |   By  |  0 Comments

Jennifer Toth is a mom, US Navy Vet wife, Ortho M.A., Wedding Officiant, Mannington super fan (every room in her home has Mannington flooring!) and the creator of @lilredranch, an Instagram account which documents her new home build experience. We talked to Jennifer about her home’s style, why she chose Mannington, and what recommendations she would make for someone getting ready to give their home a remodel.

Farmhouse Vinyl Plank Flooring

Throughout her home Jennifer installed the following Mannington Floors: ADURA®Max Aspen, color: Alpine, Luxury Vinyl Sheet: Filigree, Colors: Pewter and Iron and Penny Lane, Color: Quartzite With Granite (clockwise in photo below).

Penny Lane, Color: Quartzite With Granite.
  1. How would you define your home style?

Our home style is Rustic farmhouse with a few modern elements.

  2. What decor elements did you use to make your style come to life?

We incorporated Rustic barn beams over our fireplace and a barn beam post at the top of our staircase/entryway. Shiplap was a must not only over our fireplace but also in our stairwell and our drop zone coming into the garage. We also added a huge barn door, created by our carpenter, in our master bedroom that leads into our master bathroom.

Open, wormy chestnut shelves flank our stove which has a shiplap range hood as well. We used more modern hardware for the cabinets throughout our home. Most of the rooms in our house have been painted Torque White by Sherwin-Williams. However, our island and range hood are more of a gray. Everything is bright and open. Our living room, dining room, and kitchen are within our open floor plan. It’s so nice to be able to have people over and all be in the same room at the same time.

  3. Why did you choose Mannington’s ADURA®Max Vinyl Plank and Luxury Vinyl Sheet floors?

We chose Mannington ADURA®Max Vinyl flooring primarily due to having two 100lb Chocolate Labradoodles! When we researched the different products that we could use for flooring, we found that this Mannington product stood up better than any other on the market. Not only for the high traffic but also spills, etc. It is so easy to maintain and looks beautiful in every room of our home. The different styles and color options were incredible! When people see the luxury vinyl sheet flooring in our master bath, they think that it is actually tile until we tell them that it is vinyl. We honestly feel that the flooring within our home was one of the most important elements in creating the character that we wanted to reflect.

  4. Why did you choose those particular colors and patterns?

The colors and patterns that we chose are a direct reflection of the farmhouse vibe that we wanted to portray. The ADURA®Max Aspen Alpine flooring has the exact colors and tones that we needed to accentuate our beautiful fireplace. The stones that are within our fireplace are from my great grandmother’s property in Connecticut.

  5. How are the floors holding up?

We moved into our home the beginning of January, and as you know in Ohio, we have some pretty harsh winters. Our flooring looks just as it did when it was put in. You would never know that four people and two huge dogs live in our home. It is so comfortable to walk on, and I find myself going barefoot most of the time. It’s so cushy!

  6. How did you choose which flooring type went into each room?

Our wonderful builders at pH Design and Construction brought multiple samples to our new build. We were able to make our choices conveniently right here at the house.

  7. You have pets. Did they factor into the types of floors you bought?

Absolutely! Again, this was the key factor in choosing Mannington flooring! We wanted to make sure that the flooring we put in was going to last a lifetime. And by the looks of it, it will probably last well past that.

  8. Would you recommend these floors to your followers?

We would absolutely recommend Mannington flooring to all of our followers, friends, and family. When my family was in from Connecticut recently, they just couldn’t believe that we did not have hardwood floors within our home. Tricks on them. Not only do they look like wood floors, but they feel even better underneath your feet. We had Pergo flooring in a previous home, and within a month, it had chipped.

  9. What are the top three things people should look for when shopping for floors?
    • Durability
    • Color choices and patterns
    • Comfort
  10. Any additional tips for people designing a home or remodeling?

Do your research! Going with the most expensive product is definitely the wrong choice. Mannington flooring is not only beautiful and durable but also extremely cost-effective! The choices that Mannington floors provide reflect every home style possible. Whether it’s Farmhouse, Coastal, or Modern, Mannington has it all!

7 Reasons Why Vinyl Plank is Better Than Ceramic Tile

  |   By  |  0 Comments

Vinyl planks are taking over the flooring industry, and for good reason! As technology advances, so does the way the flooring we install in our homes is engineered. If you’re weighing the pros and cons of both options, here are 7 reasons why vinyl plank is a better choice than ceramic tile:

  1. Cost. Vinyl plank is much more budget-friendly than ceramic tile. Depending on the type of tile you are choosing, ceramics can cost as much as hardwood or high-quality carpet. Materials aside, it costs 40% less to install vinyl plank than it does to install ceramic tile.

  2. Faster and easier. Installing ceramic tile is labor-intensive and takes a lot of time, so you will most likely need a professional if you want it installed properly. Vinyl plank is DIY-friendly and 60% quicker to install than ceramic tile. With Mannington’s ADURA®MaxAPEX, ADURA®Max and ADURA®Rigid vinyl plank floors, there’s no need to pull up the existing level hard surface floor. Plus, they can be installed directly on top of your existing hard surface floor. If you want to see an installation comparison in action, watch this video:
  3. Durability. Both vinyl plank and ceramic tile are known to be durable flooring options. However, ceramic can chip and crack over time. Ceramic tile is more prone to damage (think dropping something heavy on the surface) than vinyl plank. Vinyl plank is also a better option if you have children or pets.

  4. Aesthetic Appeal – Vinyl planks are offered in many looks that are similar to tile. The photographic technology allows vinyl to mimic the appearance of ceramic (or any flooring style you could possibly want) in a way that’s nearly indistinguishable from the real thing. Plus, this added layer allows the planks to withstand extended use.

Gray Wood Slat Vinyl Plank Flooring
Clockwise from top left: Tracery, Color: LeadPasadena, Color: PumiceHampton, Color: SandalTrellis, Color: Iron.

  5. Less mess. Prepping to install ceramic tile is a mess. Because you must rip up the flooring and make sure the surface is even before installation, there is an excess of dust involved in the process. When cutting the ADURA® floating floors, there is little to no dust. Vinyl plank is also easier to keep clean post installation.

  6. No wait time. With vinyl plank, there is no waiting for the floor to cure or dry. You can live on it right away!

  7. Not as permanent. Once ceramic tile is installed, it can be very difficult to remove. If you’re someone who likes to change trends and home design elements, floating vinyl plank floors are easier to take out and replace.

If you like the look of ceramic tile floors, Mannington offers many vinyl plank options that are similar to ceramic. You don’t have to compromise on style when you choose vinyl plank!

Ultimate Guide to Hardwood Flooring

  |   By  |  0 Comments

As a leader in the flooring industry, Mannington has put together a guide that details everything you need to know about hardwood floors. Whether you’re having a new home built or simply looking to make an upgrade to your home’s existing floors, hardwood is a beautiful, durable option! Before you decide on hardwood, here’s what you need to know.

Hardwood Flooring Options

There are three types of hardwood floors available to you:

  1. Solid hardwood flooring is a solid piece of wood from top to bottom.
  2. Engineered hardwood flooring is real wood from top to bottom that’s normally made using multiple wood veneers or slats of wood glued together at opposing directions. Mannington only produces engineered hardwood and here’s why:
    • It’s the most environmentally friendly. Engineered hardwood uses half as many trees as solid wood floors
    • Engineered hardwood floors can be installed where solid hardwood floors cannot. You can install engineered hardwood below grade and direct to concrete which you can’t do with solid hardwood floors. It’s so versatile, you can even install it on walls!
    • Engineered is more dimensionally stable and less likely to warp with seasonal change
  3. Composite engineered hardwood flooring contains real wood on the wearable surface only. The backing and core material may be made up of any type of composite material.

Benefits of Hardwood Floors

In addition to their natural beauty, wood floors are crafted to stand up to all phases of life.

  • Long-lasting. The life span of a wood floor can exceed 100 years, making it a tremendous value. When they start to lose their luster, some hardwood floors can easily be sanded and refinished multiple times to restore their beauty. As an alternative, if you do not wish to change the color, a screen and recoat process can refresh the coating and restore the luster of the floor. While hardwood floors are long-lasting, they can be prone to indentation because it’s a natural product. Keep this in mind while you’re shopping and try to find a brand that has extra protection – all Mannington hardwood floors have ScratchResistTM, Mannington’s patented high performance coating, with Aluminum Oxide to help keep floors looking newer longer.
  • Attractive. Whether your home is traditional or contemporary, brand new or centuries old, wood floors offer endless design possibilities to fit your personal style.
  • Easy to clean. Routine cleaning involves sweeping, dust mopping, or vacuuming on the bare floor setting.
  • Allergy-friendly. Hardwood doesn’t harbor mold, dust, or animal dander like carpeting does, which makes it better for homes of allergy sufferers.
  • Increase a home’s value. According to a Quantitative Evaluation of Real Estate Professionals for the National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA), homes with wood floors sell faster and for more money than homes without them. The study also found that many real estate agents indicate identical homes with wood floors can sell for up to 10% more.

Cleaning Your Hardwood Floors

Keep your hardwood floors looking their best with these cleaning tips:

  1. Remove dirt, dust, pet hair, and other debris. Sweep or vacuum regularly, since built-up grit can damage the finish and surface of hardwood. The vacuum head must be a brush or felt type and be certain the wheels of the vacuum are clean and do not damage the finish. Make sure you disengage the beater bar on your vacuum to avoid damaging the surface of your hardwood floor.
  2. Use a misting hardwood cleaner to remove the dirt and debris that has built up over time on your hardwood surfaces. Use a cleaner that’s recommended by the manufacturer.Make sure it is a cleaner approved for use on pre-finished hardwood.Using a microfiber cloth mop, lightly spray the floor and use the mop to wipe the surface. Remove any excess with a damp or dry cloth – this is an important step, as standing moisture can cause your hardwood to bubble or buckle.
  3. Do not use oil soaps, liquid or paste wax products or other household cleaners that contain lemon oil, tung oil or ammonia.

Other Care and Maintenance Tips:

  • Wood is a natural product that lives in a comfort zone of 35% – 55% relative humidity, and between 60 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit.  To ensure the long life of your wood floor, the HVAC system should remain active at all times.
  • Keep pets nails trimmed and paws clean and free of dirt, gravel, grease, oil and stains.
  • Use a dolly and protective sheets of plywood when moving heavy objects.
  • Make certain furniture casters and floor protectors are clean and operate properly minimum of 1″ continuous width is recommended).
  • Remove shoes with spiked or damaged heels before walking on the floor.

Misconceptions About Hardwood Flooring

Sometimes, hardwood flooring gets a bad rap! Mannington’s here to put those misconceptions about hardwood to rest:

  • Hardwood floors are hard to keep clean. Maintenance of your hardwood floors simply requires a sweep! Unlike carpet, which requires a wet solution to get a deep clean, all you need to refresh your hardwood is a broom or dusting cloth.
  • Wood flooring scratches easily. While any kind of flooring is susceptible to scratches, what can look like scratches in hardwood are in the finish, not the wood itself. Unlike tile or vinyl, all it takes is a simple color marker touchup and the hardwood is as good as new!
  • Wood floors get dirtier than other flooring options. Your floors will get dirty, no matter what type of floor you install! The dirt and dust we see on wood floors is the same amount that would collect on other flooring types – it’s just not as obvious on tile or carpet.
  • Hardwood floors make a room feel colder. Carpet is a flooring option that can retain heat and help insulate your home, but hardwood floors can do the same. Rich, dark shades of wood paired with the perfect accent rug can create a cozy space that will look and feel warmer.

Hardwood Floor Installation

Installing wood floors is a lot more complicated than painting your walls or replacing the hardware on your kitchen cabinets, so it is not recommended as a DIY project. In the long run, you will save money and time by using a professional.

Ultimate Guide to Laminate Flooring

  |   By  |  0 Comments

As the leader in flooring, Mannington has put together a guide that details everything you need to know about the laminate flooring options on the market. From an overview on the different options available, to benefits, misconceptions and cleaning tips, take the confusion out of floor shopping by reading this handy guide.

Laminate Flooring Options

Laminate flooring is offered in a variety of colors, textures, and styles. It is one of the most affordable and versatile types of flooring for homes and commercial spaces, as it is designed to emulate the appearance of real wood, tile, or stone with vastly superior performance benefits. Laminate floors can come in styles such as:

  • Handscraped & Rustic – Expensive treatments in hardwood simulated in laminate
  • Reclaimed – Another hardwood lookalike with a lighter, more natural feel.
  • Weathered & Distressed – Yet another hardwood look works perfectly with the farmhouse style of décor.
  • Marquetry – This visual uses an inlaid pattern to form an intricate design. Chevron is a popular marquetry look today.

Laminate Floor Layouts & Patterns

The way laminate flooring is installed can completely alter the way it looks and feels in a space. There are a variety of arrangements laminate can be installed, including:

  • Wide Planks – This style of laminate is great for larger areas. Because of the width of the planks, the installation is fast and easy and the visual fills large spaces
  • Mixed Width – Planks in varying widths or planks that have a mixed width appearance make for a uniquely rustic laminate floor.
  • Diagonal – Traditional laminate planks are laid out diagonally to create visual interest and depth in a space.

Benefits of Laminate Floors

Laminate floors offer a variety of benefits, including:

  • *Waterproof. Not all laminate flooring is waterproof, but Mannington’s Restoration Collection® laminate floors feature our SpillShield® Waterproof Surface Warranty. There’s no need to worry about spills, melting ice cubes, water dripping dogs and more which makes it great for kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, basements and mudrooms.
  • Affordability. Laminate can provide you with the look of hardwood or tile at a fraction of the cost.
  • *Superior indoor air quality. This is a very important topic for homeowners and all Mannington laminate is FloorScore® certified for superior indoor air quality.Laminate also does not trap dirt, dust, or allergens, making it perfect for homes where this is a concern.
  • Low-Maintenance. Laminate provides you with the appearance of hardwood without having to re-stain or re-finish the floor. Plus, it’s easier to keep clean than carpeting or tiled floors.
  • Extremely durable. Laminate floors provide you with up to 5x more scratch resistance than hardwood.
  • Variety. If you’re looking for flooring that’s going to help your home stand out from the others in your neighborhood, laminate can help! With so many colors and styles to choose from, it’s easy to amplify your home décor with flooring.
  • *Made in USA. Mannington laminate floors are proudly made in the USA.
  • *NALFA Certified – Mannington Laminate floors must pass a rigorous 11 point test to certify to the North American Laminate Flooring Association standards. Not all laminate can do this!

*When looking for a laminate floor, be sure to do your research especially around these topics. Mannington offers floors with these attributes, but not every flooring manufacturer does.

Cleaning Your Laminate Floors

Laminate is one of the easiest floors to clean and maintain. Sweep, dust, or vacuum regularly and periodically clean with products designed specifically for laminate surfaces. Avoid using soap or detergents mixed with water, as these can cause the laminate to swell or bubble. Never use abrasive materials like steel wool on laminate, as they can scratch the surface.

When spills occur, use a damp cloth to blot them up as quickly as possible. Always avoid leaving liquids standing on your laminate floors.

Misconceptions About Laminate Flooring

Laminate has quite a few misconceptions around it. Read below as we help clear up some of the most common myths associated with laminate flooring:

  • Laminate damages easily. This may have been true of laminate floors in the past, but today laminate is constructed with thick, durable layers that are resistant to everyday wear and tear, from high heeled shoes to pet claws and children’s toys. Be mindful that not all laminate options are created equal – it’s important to look for quality. Mannington offers is extremely durable laminate that is resistant to stains, moisture, scratches, and general wear and tear.
  • Laminate is expensive. Laminate is one of the most affordable options on the market, especially when it’s compared to the costs of installing carpet, tile, and hardwood.
  • Laminate looks cheap. Laminate floors today take on incredibly realistic wood and tile visuals and are far from cheap looking. In fact, it can be difficult to tell the difference between real hardwood and laminate. Did you know? Mannington’s award-winning Restoration Collection® laminate floors are created by an in-house styling team, giving Mannington some of the most realistic designs on the market today.
  • Laminate is another word for luxury vinyl. Many people think that LVT and laminate are the same, but they are constructed very differently. LVT has a vinyl core while laminate has a wood-fiber core, which causes them to react differently to moisture.

Laminate Floor Installation

To prepare for a flooring installation, any furniture or appliances will need to be removed from the area. Then, the current flooring and trim will be removed, along with any hardware that’s present. In some cases, the subfloor may also require preparation.

If your subfloor is concrete, it needs to be clean and dry to apply new laminate flooring. Any holes or cracks present need to be repaired, as well as any high spots or bumps. If your subfloor is linoleum or vinyl and in good condition, laminate can be applied on top of it. If the subfloor is worn, a coat of leveler may be necessary. If you’re installing the flooring yourself, be sure to seek installation instructions or DIY videos from the flooring manufacturer.
